Rumia smiled. "Great! I can't wait to learn stuff from him, but uh... can I have my ribbon back?"
Hakkyou muttered, "You know Avarvice, you really shouldn't get in my personal space like that... it's annoying."

"I've heard a lot about you... and I'm glad you think so highly of me, but..." Shoki paused, worried about what she was going to say next, but Yukari's look implored her to go on. "If you're so worried about Gensokyo, why don't you protect it yourself?"

Keine sighed in relief when she saw Mokou. No matter what forces came against them, there was no way she could be beaten. She calmly walked out of the building, with the others following her, so they could stop the youkai invasion.

Avarvice simply held up his hands as Hakkyou told him off. "Alright, Alright. I'm leaving." He tossed Rumia's ribbon back to her, but little did anyone know, he had quickly swapped it out for one that was nearly identical, but would enhance Rumia's strength, not to the extent that she couldn't control it, but it would increase her mastery over darkness and even give her the same neon orange eyes that Lance possessed, making it possible to see in the dark. Nothing better than a headstart. Avarvice thought to himself.
______________
"You certainly have guts." Yukari said as she fanned herself. "But I cannot get mad at you, for what you say makes sense. Why would I, Gensokyo's guardian, simply be sitting here? It is because." She sighed. "I do not have any power over the man known as Blade Soulheart, he exists outside my influence, if I tried to fight him, it'd probably end poorly for me. He seems to be immune to people who can alter dimensional borders and while that is far from the only ability I possess, it is my strongest and he would likely be able to shrug off my other attacks. That is why." She closed her fan and pointed it at Shoki. "You must master magic and join the fight, physical and magical attacks work best against this man, and that is why both Ling and River have headed to the front lines. Now before you say anything, what do River and Ling have that I don't? Isn't it simple? They don't have anything holding them back." She gave a small smile. "I have so much of my power divided between many familiars and controlling the borders, that I simply do not have the sheer magical or physical strength to match him. It's true that I could regain my magical strength, but that would require putting Gensokyo in an even more unstable state, and the last time that happened, the lunar war occurred, I will not risk that. Now you see why, I am depending on you and the others to solve this."

"Go Mokou! Light up the area with blazing fury!" River shouted as he pointed forward.
"What do I look like, a pokemon?" She grumbled as she lit a fireball in her right hand, lighting the way.
"I can sense a powerful magical force nearby, it may be the youkai we're looking for." Ling spoke in a monotone.
"I hope so, I'm getting bored playing hide and seek." River replied.
"Ummm...Would you stop yanking on my hair like it's a string to a light?" Mokou said looking back at him.
"Sorry." River said as he removed his hands immediately.

Shoki absorbed this as calmly as she could, but she still felt like screaming. If she could really fight these youkai, if even Yukari needed her to fight in her stead, then why couldn't she do it now!? She knew she wasn't ready, that it would be years before she would be, but she yearned to go, to crush the youkai under her magical might... She took a deep breath, and tried to focus on the book.
"I see... then I'll get back to work, then. Thank you for explaining, Miss Yakumo."

Keine saw youkai moving everywhere in the corners of her vision, but none dared attack... yet. Mokou, once she was done threatening to light River on fire, sent up a gigantic fireball, lighting up the night and would have blinded all of them if they hadn't closed their eyes first. The enemy youkai had no such luck, and were all blinded, grasping their eyes in pain. Sensing their weakness, the four of them quickly struck.

"Why did you protect us from the light?" One of two fairies said to Lance as he stood over them with his back facing them. "We could have managed."
"Your lives are my responsibility."
"We're fairies, we'd just come back."
"But even so." He looked back at them. "Isn't dying painful?" He drew his darkness sword as he looked ahead, having blocked himself and the two fairies from the light of the fire. "Tell the others to withdraw, I'll handle this." He said as he placed orange sunglasses over his eyes. "Let's roll." He walked forward slowly as his eyes made contact with the person known as Mokou. He held out his hand and beckoned her to come closer.
"Your funeral." Mokou said softly as she charged toward him and fired two fireballs from her hands.
With one fluid motion, Lance swayed like a tree in the breeze and avoided both fireballs before lunging outward with his sword.
"Darkness don't scare me!" Mokou said as she simply blocked it with her right arm, but recoiled seconds later. "Hot!" She looked at her burning sleeve. "These are...!"
"Dark flames." Lance said as he advanced, landing a barrage of blows on Mokou. "Your flame resistance doesn't cover my type of my fire." He swung horizontally as Mokou leaped above his attack and flipped, landing behind him and fired another bombardment of heat bullets.
"No use." He said calmly as he cut through each and every one of them with ease. "You lack discipline."
"Then allow me!" River said as he cut in front of Mokou and launched a heavy punch toward Lance, who avoided it. "You guys keep going, I'll handle this darkness flame youkai myself. I do love my 1 on 1's." He chuckled. "Granted, I guess I'm not much more disciplined than Mokou, oh well!"
"Fine. I shall deal with the rest later." Lance spoke with little to no emotion. He beckoned River. "Show me what you can do."

Keine watched as River and the darkness youkai fought, realizing there wasn't much she could do here. Spying some other youkai skulking around nearby, she quickly blasted them with danmaku, with Mokou doing the same and lighting up that area. "Mokou, while that darkness youkai is distracted, you can light up the village!" Mokou nodded and pulled out a spell card.
"Immortal Fire Bird: Flying Phoenix!" She fired out a giant bird-shaped blast of fire into the sky, brightening the entire village. It wouldn't dispel the darkness permanently, but it would hurt the youkai and give Keine and the others the advantage. Keine and the others quickly charged out to find more youkai and defeat them.

Blade watched as the battle unfolded with his arms crossed, it was turning out to be far bigger than he anticipated. He knew he couldn't underestimate it's defenses. He wouldn't intervene, not yet. Avarvice was gone, already heading toward the battlefield. He would be more than enough. A cold wind blew through the sky, it was truly the dawn of a war.
___________________
"So, you're the ones causing such a ruckus." A man's voice spoke from in front of the three defenders as he seemingly materialized out of thin air. There stood a man in a leather black trench coat with a tuxedo underneath it, he had dark red spiky hair and black eyes with red pupils. His third eye wrapped around his body, the veins covered in thorns. The third eye itself was completely black except for red pupils. He began clapping. "Bravo, I didn't expect the village to mount such a defense."
"So you're the o-" Mokou began to say.
"Behind this?" He said finishing her sentence. "Incorrect, I am simply a humble servant. I know what you're thinking, it's kinda funny, how you just wanna be done with and that you don't want to be here. I can understand you perfectly. Sadly, it is destiny that we must fight this night." He chuckled. "But I am an honorable opponent." He closed his third eye right then and there. "So I will fight you without my mind reading." It was odd, he didn't change at all, was he a Satori Youkai capable of closing his third eye just like that without any side effects?
"Sounds fine to me." Mokou said as she cracked her knuckles.

Keine had a bad feeling about this satori. If he could afford to be "honorable" then he must have much more power than he was letting on right now, and she could already tell his power was comparable to Mokou's. She wished she could transform, but without the moon, it was impossible. If only this darkness could be broken... she glanced over at River and the Darkness youkai, who were still fighting. She couldn't tell who was winning, but if he could be defeated... "Ling, I need you to help River with that darkness youkai. The sooner he's defeated, the sooner I can transform. We need to end this before anyone gets hurt. I don't think Mokou can beat that satori on her own, and I won't be much help as I am now."

Lance simply avoided most of River's attacks, the man wasn't the fastest at all, so it was easy to dodge. Out of the corner of his eye he noticed that soon he'd have to fight against more people. Without a second thought, he leaped through the air and corkscrewed so that he landed next to Avarvice, brushing his white hair out of his face he addressed them. "If you wish to team up against someone who wishes to fight fairly, than you are no different from a villain. Very well, Avarvice and I shall fight you together." He said as he brandished his darkness sword.
"It seems so." Avarvice said with a sigh as his third eye opened. "I was hoping to play with you people, but since it seems you're in such a rush to die, I suppose I could make your funeral arrangements for you."
Lance simply snapped his fingers and the darkness became even stronger, engulfing any light that may have previously existed, he wasn't bothered at all and Avarvice could rely on reading minds. "Are you ready?" The white haired youkai said softly. "Let the nightmare begin."
"Gah, I can't see a thing!" River said as he nearly stumbled over his own feet.
"My fire, it can't illuminate this stuff!" Mokou yelled from somewhere nearby. "Everyone be on guard, they could strike at any moment."
Little did they know, that Lance was sneaking up on Keine and was about to lay a deadly stab to her back. Lance lunged forward, the blade aiming to piece Keine's left upper back and impale her left lung.

But a robotic arm grabbed the blade, saving Keine's life. Nitori chuckled and adjusted her night vision goggles.
"Sorry, but it'll take more than darkness to fool me. Keine, this guy is right behind you."
With her holding Lance still, he was unable to dodge when Keine blasted him at point-blank range, sending him flying into a nearby building.
"Nitori, what brought you here?"
"We kappa are the friends of humans, we can't stand aside when the village gets attacked." Sure enough, kappa were all over the village now, fighting off the youkai. "Oh, and you're going to need these." Nitori handed the four night vision goggles, and suddenly the darkness became as bright as day. Keine could even see the moon overhead, but to her regret its power still couldn't reach her.

Lance climbed out of the ruins of the building with nary a scratch. "How very interesting. Avarvice, you know what to do?"
"Of course." He snapped his fingers and a huge blinding light exploded outwards dispelling all the darkness and likely blinding those who had night vision goggles on. "Now then, shall we get out of here?"
"Against so many, that is the only option." Lance beckoned the remaining fairy and tengu to follow him and they escaped during the distraction caused by the light, reaching the safety of the hill base camp within seconds.
"That could have gone better." Avarvice said as he cracked his neck. "Those kappa intervened, we were outnumbered and outgunned."
"Surely you could have beat them all." Blade brought up.
"Well yes, but I figured I'd say that honor for you. The kappa's obviously change things, we must finish this now."
"Of course." Blade said as he walked forward before vanishing in a whirl of speed and appearing directly above the village. His arms were crossed with the light of the moon highlighting his form. "People of the human village!" His deep voice boomed over the town. "My name is Blade Soulheart. I give you this chance alone, surrender and give up or you will all die." His tone was deadly serious. "If you do not surrender." He held his hands up and summoned a giant darkness blast the size of what could be called a small hill. "I will destroy you."
River whistled as he looked up at the blast with his hands in his pocket. "That's a mighty fine attack you got there, but I bet you I can deflect it."
Blade raised an eyebrow. "You wish for me to throw this? Are you insane?"
"I've been told that by a few people. So what do you say? Throw me the ball! Come on, I'll be a good boy and catch it."
"So be it." Blade said as he brought his arms back and launched the blast at them, the shockwave sure to blow everyone way.
River smirked with his hands never leaving his pockets. "Let's do this."
"You're crazy!" Mokou shouted as she grabbed Keine and Nitori and ran for it, leaving the village in the process.
Ling simply vanished via a teleport, grabbing a few kappa along the way.
Little did anyone know, Sei had already evacuated everyone else, the only person left in the village was River.
The blast was closing in now and was even destroying the tops of some buildings. River stood in the same spot, he didn't move a muscle as he smirked at the blast. As soon as the blast came close to engulfing him however, he moved his face forward and bit the darkness. He spun around really fast before unclenching his teeth and letting the blast go toward Blade. He looked up at Blade who had barely dodged it and grinned. "Woof, Woof."
"D-Did you just bite it!? How did you do that?"
"I can summon clouds, at the last moment I coated the spot I bit with the essence of clouds and bit it. I can sit on the things, biting them isn't really a stretch." River said with a shrug.
"Nevermind...it seems you're far more powerful than I have anticipated."
"Dumb, Dumb, Dumb, Dumb! No matter how genre savvy you are, if you think the silly guy is the weakest, then you've made a grave mistake. I'll show you exactly why I'm the strongest!" The more River hung around these people, the more he reverted from his cold personality, maybe it was just a thin shell after all.
"I notice you're reveling in your victory...but as you swung around that blast." Blade pointed at the village around him. "You destroyed everything around you."
Sure enough, the village was in ruins, smoldering fires everywhere as not a single building was left standing.
"Aw shit..." River said with a facepalm. "I gotta stop going all out."

Keine knew that everyone was ok thanks to Sei, but even so she was furious. How could River treat this like a game!? They all nearly died! She muttered to herself,
"If he survives this, I'll be glad to finish him off..."

Hakkyou would have been astonished, but by this point just about nothing could surprise her. After making sure Avarvice wasn't anywhere nearby she said,
"Why are we even here, Rumi? Compared to these guys were nothing but insects." Wriggle glared at her. "Sorry, I meant we're like dust to them. Less, really! If any of us tried to fight those two, we wouldn't even get their clothes dirty, we'd just die!"
"Then why would Blade want our help?" Wriggle asked.
"Why do you have bugs working for you?"
"So they can fight for me and- oh..."
"Exactly, we're just cannon fodder! They just want to take over Gensokyo, and they'll probably kill us off afterword anyway. Dd you see that blast? If that River guy hadn't sent it back, it would have destroyed the village and everyone in it, including our own troops! He doesn't care about us!"
Rumia's eyes widened in fear.
"So... what do we do?"
"I... I don't know. I'm sorry I dragged all of you into this. If there's anything I can do to get us all out of here, I'll do it, but if any of you get a chance to save yourself, take it and don't look back." She sighed. "For now, I guess we should just wait and see what happens."

"Then why don't you come with me?" A soft voice spoke as suddenly the crazy feeling of the battle was swept away by peaceful silence. Standing on top of a tree was the man known as Sei Yagami, his purple hair flowing in the breeze. "Blade Soulheart isn't the type to care about others, if you continue to stay here you will die. If you join with me however, you will win. I've got people like that River and Ling on my side. It is better to side with enemies that you can trust, than allies you cannot." He snapped his fingers and a portal opened as he adjusted his white cloak. "It is up to you, live to fight another day, or die here. The choice is yours." He walked into the portal, but left it open behind himself. He would emerge at the same area where Keine, Mokou and the others regrouped, several miles to the west of the Human village.
__________
River stood staring at Blade, it was just the two of them and anything could happen. He knew that fighting anymore here would probably endanger others, so he quickly withdrew to the gathering spot. He landed with a crash next to Sei who had just arrived.
"Sorry about the village...I kinda got carried away."
___________
Blade landed near Avarvice and Lance, his arms crossed.
"That Hakkyou is going to betray us." Avarvice said.
"Let them do what they do. It is better to be true to yourself than to be held to a lie. We will not pursue them, we will face them on the battlefield." Blade said as he withdrew along with the other remaining members of his army.

Hakkyou stared into the portal, wonder what to do.
"Guys do you think we should-"
"You're the one who said we should leave." Rumia pointed out.
"Yeah, but the answer to all our problems appearing just after I said it? That's a bit... suspicious. How can we know this isn't a trap?"
"We don't," Mystia interjected. "But either we stay here with the people that will kill us, or follow this new voice, that only maybe will kill us."
"...We're doomed, aren't we? Well, I guess we don't have much choice..." They all walked through the portal. They saw what had been waiting for them- Keine, who had finally transformed, River, and Ling, all enemies of Hakkyou, and a few others she didn't recognize. She froze for a second when she saw them, then started shoving everyone back. "Back to the portal! BACK TO THE PORTAL!"
But before they could reach it, the portal vanished, stranding them. Hakkyou looked back at her old enemies.
"Aheheh... yep, definitely doomed." Seeing the death glare Keine was giving her, she said, "Look, I know you want to kill me, but let the others go, ok? I dragged them into this, and they shouldn't suffer because of me. Just... let them go, alright?"
Keine blinked in surprise, shocked that the murderous youkai would actually care about anyone.

"I say we let them join us." River said as he placed black sunglasses over his eyes and slicked back his hair. He had Sei use his portal to give him a new toy, a magical sawed-off shotgun which he lay over his right shoulder. "Groovy." He said with a grin. "The more firepower we have the better. We have two choices here, feud amongst ourselves and die, or team up and survive. It's not a very hard choice."
"River is correct." Ling spoke up. "We must all work together for this, but that means no more blowing things up."
"I make no promises." River said as he walked up to a ridge. "All this chaos brings to mind something. Where's that hakurei shrine maiden?" He asked looking over his shoulder.
"No idea." Sei said in a tone that suggested he totally knew where she was. "For now, we should bide our time and think of a strategy."
"Smart idea. Hey Mokou-Mokou, make us a campfire will ya?"
"My name's just Mokou..." She said with a grumble as she reluctantly made a fire.
"Thanks, you're a doll." River replied with a wink and then avoided a punch from Mokou. "Feisty aren't you? I like that." He made a kissing sound. "Come dance with me, dance with me." He said in a joking tone as he continued to dodge her attacks.

Hakkyou sighed in relief.
"So... you're not going to kill me?"
Keine glared at her.
"It seems not, but I'm watching you. Do anything to betray us, and death will be a mercy."
Rumia floated in front of Hakkyou.
"And if you do anything to hurt Hakks, you'll have to answer to all of us!"
Seeing the looks they were giving each other, Wriggle tried to get between everyone.
"That River guy is right, we shouldn't be fighting each other! Let's just calm down, ok? Now that we're all here, what do we do?"
