Recent years, Independent Candidates have gained relevance in the Mexican political landscape and have emerged as an option to consider in electoral processes for those citizens who do not feel represented by political parties and who see in this figure an opportunity for renewal. and to exercise greater control in political activities. Discussions have been generated about the requirements and the general context in order to understand their true scope and act in decision making. Starting in 2014, the figure of independent candidates was integrated, and in accordance with the General Law of Electoral Institutions and Procedures, Independent Candidates must meet a series of criteria to be able to apply. Among them is obtaining a certain percentage of citizen signatures in support of their candidacy, as well as presenting an electoral platform that reflects their ideals and political proposals. These requirements not only imply an arduous task, but can also be exclusive for people who do not have sufficient economic resources to mobilize and obtain these signatures, which could restrict the participation of Independent Candidates and limit the true representation they could have.
Citizens see Independent Candidates as a way to renew politics and eradicate corruption and agreements between political parties, but they face significant challenges such as access to resources and the lack of political structure, which can make their career difficult. In order to obtain proof of registration as an Independent Candidate, the following actions must be carried out: Inform the National Electoral Institute (INE) about the intention to participate as a candidate or independent BYB Directory candidate within the deadlines and before the authorities indicated in the call. If you gather citizen support, you are able to submit your application for registration and if you meet the requirements, the General Council of the INE grants you a Certificate of Registration as a Candidate or Independent Candidate and from the next day you can start your electoral campaign.
